Quaestiones Mathematicae: Open access publishing agreement

Quaestiones Mathematicae is part of the Read & Publish Transformative Open Access agreement that was made recently between Taylor & Francis and the consortium of Southern African institutions that are united in SANLiC, which included nearly all South African Universities (see the list here). The arrangement is for three years, and applies to papers with original research published in 2024, 2025 or 2026, for which the corresponding author is associated with one of the member institutions of SANLiC. For qualifying papers that have been published in 2024 already, please contact a library representative from your institution, to arrange that your paper will be made available in open access format.

For the announcement made by SANLiC, including further details on the arrangement, please see:

Communicating Discovery Science

symposium on ‘Communicating Discovery Science’ is set to take place from 18 – 20 November 2024 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The event is organised by the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) at Stellenbosch University, with support from The Kavli Foundation.

Discovery science includes basic, foundation, curiosity-driven, blue-sky or fundamental scientific research across all disciplines. Public engagement around discovery science is essential to combat certain public perceptions that it is too abstract and removed from society to be worthy of funding.

The symposium aims to deepen understanding of effective public engagement around discovery science. We will explore ways to improve the practice of communicating discovery science, sharing insights and creating a supportive community for scientists and science communication practitioners and researchers focused on basic science. We will also explore the relevance and importance of communicating basic science in relation to applied science.

We invite you to explore the symposium website – www.discoveryscience.co.za – and consider responding to the call for proposals. We are asking for proposals of maximum 500 words by 31 May 2024.

A six-member scientific advisory committee will review the proposals and lead the programme development.

If you wish to be kept informed, please subscribe to the mailing list – https://www.discoveryscience.co.za/subscribe

WiM Division – some highlights and photos

The past year was one of firsts for the WiM division.

The first historic meeting of the Women in Maths (WiM Division) took place virtually on the 18th of August 2023. Present were the first committee members, Prof Karin-Therese Howell (convenor), Dr Thama Duba, Dr Belinda Huntley, Dr Linke Potgieter, Prof Eunice Mphako-Banda, Prof Paran Pillay and Dr Cerene Rathilal. During subsequent meetings and discussions, the committee drafted a constitution and set goals for the Division.

The WiM Division hosted its first event, a networking lunch at the SAMS Congress in December 2023. Prof Eunice Mphaka-Banda opened the event and the SAMS Council President, Prof Zurab Janelidze, welcomed everyone present. Prof Mphaka-Banda emphasised in her speech that the focus for the Division should be to function as a team. In her words, “A team is not a group of people who work together, a team is a group of people who trust each other. As a division, our successful journey will begin the moment we realize that we do not have to prove anything to anyone, but we build trust and have honest discussions among ourselves, the moment we realize that our potential means nothing without taking action and the moment we start building a strong support system among members. We need to learn or relearn to cheer for each other in any small victories. Do not think that you are too small to make a difference or to be noticed in WiM. Be a mosquito! Make the noise!”
