On behalf of council of the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS), it is a great pleasure to inform you that Professor Barry Green has recently been elected president of the International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA). Prof Green is currently Professor of Mathematics in the Mathematics Division of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Stellenbosch. He is also the Director of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in South Africa and the Chief Academic and Research Officer for the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS NEI). Prof Green was a key figure in the growth of AIMS since its founding in 2003 and was appointed its second Director in April of 2010. He is passionate about promoting the growth of the mathematical sciences in the developing world, particularly in Africa.
Prof Green holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town (1984) and worked as a lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch shortly thereafter. He worked as a research scientist for ten years at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, after which he returned to the University of Stellenbosch in 1996, where he was appointed Chairperson of the Mathematics Department in 2002 and Executive Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 2006 – 2009. In 2007 he received the South African Mathematical Society’s Award for Research Distinction. He has been Editor of the mathematics journal Quaestiones Mathematica from 2002 to 2015 and has served on the Editorial Board of Afrika Mathematika.
