Dear friends and colleagues,
It is our pleasure to announce the Pan-African STM Cinema Competition in science communication!
What is it?
PASTMCC is a competition in science communication where entrants submit short explainer videos in science, tech, or math. Videos should be < 6 min long.
What is the purpose?
To learn some science while promoting talented African researchers and students
What are the prizes?
Multiple 1,000 euro prizes are available.
What is the deadline?
30th October, 2024.
Who is supporting the competition?
This competition is sponsored by Humboldt-Universität, and supported by AIMS South Africa and AIMS Senegal.
How can I help?
Can you please help us by circulating the attached poster, instructions, and referee form to anyone you think may be interested?
To instructors and university administrators: could you please circulate these documents in your departmental email lists? Could you please print and display the poster in a visible location where researchers and students will find it? We would be sincerely grateful for your help.

We would like to draw your attention to the following research school:
Multiscale Modeling: Infectious Diseases, Cancer and Treatments
2-14 December 2024, Edinburgh, Scotland
This school is part of a series of events that has emerged from the collaboration of three bodies: the Mathematical Modeling Mini-Courses (3MC) program, Potchefstroom, South Africa, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Studies (PIMS), Manitoba, Canada, and the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
The school will focus on equipping participants, specifically postgraduate students and early-stage researchers, with vital skills in mathematical modeling and in the essential mathematical tools required for advanced study and research. The program will also foster connections among scholars in Mathematical Biology from the UK, Canada, and African countries.
Limited funding is available to support the transportation and accommodation/living costs of participants from institutions in Africa.
Registration deadline: June 30th, 2024.
Registrations and applications for funding are open and can be completed online on the event website.
Topics and instructors:
- Multiscale Approaches — Mariya Ptashnyk (Heriot-Watt University, UK) & Chandrasekhar Venkataraman (University of Sussex, United Kingdom)
- Cancer — Mark Chaplain (University of St Andrews, UK) & Nikolaos Sfakianakis (University of St Andrews, UK)
- Epidemiology — Julien Arino (University of Manitoba, Canada), Frank Ball (University of Nottingham, UK) & Ruth Bowness (University of Bath, UK)
- Immunology and treatment — Rachel Bearon (King’s College London, UK) & Gibin Powathil (Swansea University, UK)
- Cell Migration — John MacKenzie (University of Strathclyde, UK) & Robert Insall (Beatson Institute & University College London, UK) & Fiona Macfarlane (University of St Andrews, UK)
More details will be added on the event website soon.
We hope to see you at the research school in December.

Take note of the vacancy of a Lecturer position in Mathematics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University. The closing date to apply is 21 June 2024. Applications should be submitted through the NWU e-recruitment portal, where further details about the position can be found: https://www.pnet.co.za/jobs–Lecturer-in-Mathematics-P000832-Potchefstroom-North-West-University
Imperial College – AIMS Mathematics Workshop
Imperial College London and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) are hosting a week-long workshop from 10 – 14 June 2024 at AIMS in Muizenberg. The purpose of the workshop is to initiate longer term research collaboration and so the format is informal with a number of Imperial guests sharing their research interests in a short series of survey lectures. If you love mathematics it should be informative as well as present opportunities for collaboration.
The details can be found at: https://www.ma.imperial.ac.uk/~apal4/aims.html
There is no cost to attend, but for catering we do need people to register. If you wish to come, even if just for one or two days, please register at this link: https://forms.gle/F98YDkeSdRNYhvah6
Please contact David Holgate (dholgate@uwc.ac.za), Karin-Therese Howell (howell@aims.ac.za) or Naina Ralaivaosaona (naina@aims.ac.za) for further information.
