From the desk of the SAMS President

Dear SAMS members,

The SAMS Council is thrilled to announce that we have officially signed a Reciprocal Membership Agreement with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). As part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to fostering international academic partnerships, expanding global networks, and creating more opportunities for our community, this agreement marks a significant milestone in connecting South African mathematicians with the broader global applied mathematics community.

Under this new partnership, any SAMS member in good standing who is affiliated with a South African university or higher educational institute is eligible to apply to become a reciprocal member of SIAM. Reciprocal members will enjoy a special annual dues rate set at 70% of SIAM’s current discounted outreach rate (https://www.siam.org/membership/individual-membership/), and will receive all regular member services, benefits, publications, and applicable voting rights offered by SIAM to its standard individual members.

This agreement is designed to make global engagement more accessible, encouraging collaborative research, resource sharing, and active participation in international applied mathematics communities. We encourage our members – especially postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and established academics – to explore this opportunity to connect with SIAM’s extensive network and resources. To apply, eligible members can complete the official SIAM membership application form by designating themselves as a reciprocal applicant under the terms of this agreement.

If you have any questions regarding your membership status or the application process, please feel free to reach out to our SAMS Financial Officer, Dr. Andrew Craig (fm@sams.ac.za), or SIAM’s Membership Manager, Paula White (membership@siam.org).

Best wishes
Christian
