Workshop on Research Trends in Mathematical Modeling and Analysis in Life Sciences

The Workshop on Research Trends in Mathematical Modeling and Analysis in Life Sciences will take place at Tshikwalo Game Lodge, Dinokeng Game Reserve, from 18–21 October 2026.

Over the years, the application of mathematics to biology and the life sciences has generated exciting research challenges in areas such as epidemiology, cancer modelling, ecology, and bioengineering. This workshop aims to provide a forum for postgraduate students, emerging researchers, and established researchers to explore current research trends in mathematical modelling and analysis in the life sciences. The scientific programme will include invited lectures by leading researchers, as well as contributed talks showcasing the importance of mathematics and multidisciplinary research.

The deadline for registration and abstract submission is 15 September 2026. Financial support for postgraduate students and emerging researchers will be available upon application, subject to approval by the Scientific Committee and the availability of funds.

For further information, registration, and abstract submission, please visit the workshop website: www.up.ac.za/cf-mals2026, or see the workshop poster: MALS2026.

Logic and Machine Learning Summer School

The Applied Computational Logic and Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Ferrara and the Schools of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics at the University of Witwatersrand will be presenting a Summer School on Logic and Machine Learning.

This school introduces participants to the fundamentals of logical reasoning and its applications in machine learning, with both theoretical and practical work (we request each participant to bring their own laptop for the practical sessions). We encourage all interested participants to read more about the school on the website linked below. The details are as follows:

Dates: 12th to 16th of January 2026
Venue: University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
Website: https://sites.google.com/view/logic-and-machine-learning
RSVP: Email abuzers2000@gmail.com

Please note that the school will be free to attend; however, we will not be providing any funding for travel and living costs. Participants are requested to RSVP no later than 18 December 2025 to help us manage attendance and prepare appropriately.

Due to other functional analysis events throughout 2025, we decided to have the FAOTSA 2025 workshop team up with the 68th Congress of the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS), both at Nelson Mandela University in the Eastern Cape. The FAOTSA workshop will be from 29 November till 1 December and comprises two minicourses, while the SAMS congress will be from 2 to 5 December. Participants of FAOTSA 2025 are encouraged to give a talk in the Functional Analysis and Operator Theory session at the SAMS congress. We hope to welcome you at the fourth FAOTSA workshop at Nelson Mandela University.

  • Presenter: Jacek Banasiak (University of Pretoria)

Minicourse 2

  • Title: Quantum Convexity and Noncommutative Ordered Spaces
  • Presenter: David Blecher (University of Houston, USA)

Important dates:

  • Early bird registration deadline (for those who need funding): 26 September
