POPIA Compliance and the Processing of Personal Information by SAMS

Dear SAMS Members

We would like to inform you that the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS) is currently implementing additional measures to ensure full compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

As part of this process, SAMS has conducted a risk assessment (with respect to POPIA compliance) and is taking the necessary steps to strengthen its data protection practices and governance structures. One of the recommendations arising from this process is that the Society formally notify its members about the processing of personal information.

SAMS processes limited personal information of its members for purposes directly related to the activities of the Society. This includes, for example, membership administration, communication regarding conferences and events, the distribution of relevant information such as newsletters and announcements, as well as accounting and financial record-keeping purposes associated with membership fees and other transactions.

Please be assured that SAMS is committed to handling personal information responsibly and in accordance with applicable data protection legislation. Appropriate safeguards are being implemented to ensure that such information is processed securely and only for legitimate purposes connected to the activities of the Society.

Should you have any questions regarding the processing of personal information by SAMS, you are most welcome to contact our Information Officer, Prof. Christian Budde (BuddeCJ@ufs.ac.za or president@sams.ac.za), or our Deputy Information Officer, Dr. Simo Mthethwa (mthethwas4@ukzn.ac.za).
