Functional Analysis and Operator Theory South Africa 2025 Workshop

Functional Analysis and Operator Theory South Africa

2025 Workshop

29 November – 1 December 2025, Nelson Mandela University

Due to other functional analysis events throughout 2025, we decided to have the FAOTSA 2025 workshop team up with the 68th Congress of the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS), both at Nelson Mandela University in the Eastern Cape. The FAOTSA workshop will be from 29 November till 1 December and comprises two minicourses, while the SAMS congress will be from 2 to 5 December. Participants of FAOTSA 2025 are encouraged to give a talk in the Functional Analysis and Operator Theory session at the SAMS congress. We hope to welcome you at the fourth FAOTSA workshop at Nelson Mandela University.

Minicourse 1

  • Title: Semigroups of Operators and Applications
  • Presenter: Jacek Banasiak (University of Pretoria)

Minicourse 2

  • Title: Quantum Convexity and Noncommutative Ordered Spaces
  • Presenter: David Blecher (University of Houston, USA)

Important dates:

  • Early bird registration deadline (for those who need funding): 26 September
  • Final registration deadline: 1 November

Registration: To attend FAOTSA 2025, please register on the workshop’s website listed below. Those that qualify and require financial support, should register before the early bird registration deadline, since we will try to select the funded participants once the early bird registration closes.

Cost of participation: There will be no registration fee for the workshop. If funding allows, we will provide lunches as part of the program. Participants are required to arrange their own accommodation and transport.

SAMS Congress at NMU: Registration for the SAMS congress is independent of the registration for FAOTSA. More details on the SAMS congress will be made available on the FAOTSA website.

Support for postgraduate students and early career academics: We obtained funding from CoE-MaSS to support the attendance of a limited number of postgraduate students, postdocs and early career academics (<5 years from PhD). Those who qualify and require support, should apply before the early bird registration deadline and fill out all the required fields. We have also received funding from the London Mathematical Society to support a very limited number of international participants from other African countries.

Kindly share this announcement, available in pdf format from the link below, with those who may be interested to attend the Workshop.

3MC-CIMPA School: Second round of registration

3MC-CIMPA School: Second round of registration

Due to additional funding for local participants, we opened a second round of registration for the 3CIMPA School on “Mathematical and Statistical Modeling in Oncology” that will take place at North-West University, South Africa, on 3-14 February 2025. This concerns only those who reside in South Africa.

This CIMPA school is part of a series of events that has emerged from the collaboration of three bodies: the Mathematical Modeling Mini-Courses (3MC) program, Potchefstroom, South Africa, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Studies (PIMS), Manitoba, Canada, and the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Registration will remain open till 8 December. To register please fill out the online registration form.

Summer School on Quantitative Molecular and Cellular Biology

Summer School on Quantitative Molecular and Cellular Biology

University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, on 16-27 June 2025

We would like to draw your attention to the Summer School on Quantitative Molecular and Cellular Biology that will take place at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, on 16-27 June 2025.

This research school is part of a series of events that has emerged from the collaboration of three bodies: the Mathematical Modeling Mini-Courses (3MC) program, Potchefstroom, South Africa, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Studies (PIMS), Manitoba, Canada, and the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

The summer school aims to equip students with essential tools and methodologies for investigating complex molecular and cellular questions. Courses will cover techniques relevant to structural, molecular, and cellular biology, all driven by specific biological questions. Cancer will be used as an integrative example throughout the program.

Biological interests: Structures and topology of molecules; Transport in cells; Proteins interactions and signaling pathways; Cell shapes and structures; Introduction of cancer biology.

Methodology: Graph theory and applications in biology; Geometric and statistical methods in biological data analysis; Mathematical and computational modelling of cellular and molecular biology; Stochastic processes and dynamical systems in biological systems.

Limited funding is available for selected participants from African institutions upon successful application. Registrations and applications for funding are open and can be completed online on the event website.

Application deadline: 15 October 2024

Please disseminate the information and the attached poster to postgraduate students and other potentially interested participants.

CIMPA School: Enumerative Combinatorics with Applications to Computer Science

CIMPA School: Enumerative Combinatorics with Applications to Computer Science
Stellenbosch University, South Africa
6 – 17 January 2025

Apply: https://application.cimpa.info/
Deadline: 15 September 2024

We invite interested postgraduate students and early career researchers to apply to our summer school. The school aims to familiarise attendees with the field of enumerative and analytic combinatorics, and to show its many connections to other areas, especially computer science. The school will consist of 8 mini-courses, with practical components in python-based SageMath.

Participants from developing countries will be provided with free board and lodging for the duration of the school, and we can provide financial support for travel to a limited number of participants from developing countries. More information about the school can be found at https://math.sun.ac.za/cimpa/. We would like to strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented groups in mathematics to apply.

Please contact Sarah Selkirk (sarah.selkirk@warwick.ac.uk) for enquiries.
